What happens during a mammography?

Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breast. Each breast is compressed individually with the aid of two synthetic plates.

This procedure may be a little unpleasant (depending on how sensitive one is), but is essential to ensure satisfactory image quality. However, the pressure on the breast poses no risk to your health. The investigation takes no more than a few minutes.

Who may undergo a mammography?

Women between the ages of 45 and 69 years automatically receive a personal invitation every 2 years to undergo a mammography (X-ray of the breast). Women between the ages of 40 and 74 years may request an invitation by calling the free service hotline at 0800 500 181 (www.frueherkennen.at) eine Einladung anfordern.

The investigation is obviously voluntary and usually free of cost for you. You do not need a doctor's referral note.

Where can I undergo a mammography for early detection of cancer?

Das Diagnosezentrum Brigittenau fulfills the requirements of such a location. In other words, you may come to us as usual with your invitation letter, and need no prior appointment for the examination.

A complete list of all centers participating in this program is available at the hotline number 0800 500 181.

What preparation does this examination require?

On the day of the investigation you should wear clothes that you can take off easily, because you need to undress down to your belt for the examination. Please do not use any deodorant, powder or cream on the breast or armpits because this could impair the quality of the X-ray images.

When will I receive my report?

We will try our best to hand over your reports of mammography and (if required) ultrasound investigation right away so as to avoid any period of uncertainty regarding your diagnosis.
